Loss rates cost a fitness business about 1 to 4 percent of its membership each month depending on the tool that is used. A scary concept is that many clubs give away another 1 to 4 percent on top of the general loss rate because they don’t have a strong, consistent policy in place to handle cancellations.


Cancellations affect your total outstanding receivables base, like loss rates, but are categorized differently. Loss rates are usually the member’s decision not to pay. There is an obligation but the member breaks it by ignoring the contract. Cancellations are decisions made by the club to let a member out of a contract.
